Diagnosis & Support
If you are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), you may wish to try medication. Medication isn’t for everyone and is entirely optional. If you complete an assessment with us and are diagnosed with ADHD and would like to try medication, we can refer you to our partner prescribing service. There is a discounted initial assessment fee of £295 which allows the prescriber to complete the necessary health checks. This is completed online and the prescriber can then decide what type of medication would be suitable for you. Once you are prescribed mediation, you can receive a repeat prescription delivered to your door on a monthly basis.
Here is some initial information about ADHD mediation.
First of all, ADHD medication is optional; some people try it, others don’t. The most common type of ADHD medication are stimulants which include brand names such as Concerta and Ritalin. Stimulants work by affecting the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in your brain. Research indicates that stimulant ADHD medication is probably the most effective type of psychiatric medication in existence, with some studies indicating that up to 80% of people report a reduction in symptoms.
Stimulant ADHD medication works differently to the most common form of psychiatric medication (anti-depressants or SSRI’s). Whereas anti-depressants are taken over a period of time and have a gradual impact, ADHD stimulant medication is taken on the day you want the effect. It is usually taken in the morning, and it begins to work within 30 minutes. Depending on the dose, the effect lasts for around 10-12 hours before wearing off. This means you don’t have to take it every day, and it does not matter if you want to miss a day, or a even week. Some people choose to take medication every day, whilst others choose to take it on days when they know they need to focus.
Stimulant medication primarily impacts the inattentive symptoms associated with ADHD. Many people with ADHD say that their brain feels like a ‘spaghetti junction’ of racing and competing thoughts. This can be exhausting and makes it difficult to remain focussed on one thing. People who take stimulant medication report that it helps unravel the spaghetti junction and they can focus on one thing at a time. For this reason, taking medication can really help people in school and work situations. Some people report that taking the medication for the first time is like a ‘light bulb’ moment because within 30 minutes their brain feels like it has slowed down and they begin noticing the world around them in a different way. This can have secondary benefits of helping the person feel calmer, more organised and less hyperactive or impulsive.
However, medication is not a ‘cure’. It helps manage some ADHD symptoms, but it does not solve everything. Therefore, self-management, coaching and therapy is still helpful to holistically manage ADHD. Stimulant medication can also have some side effects, such as impacts on appetite, sleep and mood; therefore, it is not for everyone. For this reason, it is really important that you are medicated through an experienced prescriber who will consider the various options for you, and take you through a titration (testing) period. That is why we have carefully chosen our partner prescribing service.

For-Psych is a psychology-led service that uses psychological tools and therapies to assess and help people. We do not prescribe medication. However, should you wish to seek medication after working with us, we can refer you to our partner Psychiatrist for a review.
No! If you already have a diagnosis but want to learn more about what this means for you, and how you can reach your full potential because of your neurodiversity, then For-Psych can help. It would be useful to see your diagnostic report so that we can fully tailor the coaching sessions to your specific neurodivergent profile, but don’t worry, our experienced Practitioners can work this out with you if you do not have a report to hand. You won’t have to be diagnosed by us first to have access to our Coaching and Therapy Services.
Your For-Psych Psychologist will arrange a feedback session with you after they have written their report. They will go through the report with you during a one-hour disclosure meeting to make sure that you understand the outcome. You can have a family member with you if you want to, so that they can also hear the information and ask questions. You will be given a copy of your report to take with you, so that you can share this with your school/workplace, and GP, if you want to. As we are a Psychology service, we cannot prescribe medication. If you decide that you want to have medication to help with your diagnosis, we can recommend Private Psychiatrists who are experienced in supporting people with neurodiversity. If you would prefer an NHS Psychiatrist, you can share your report with your GP and ask for support. If you would like psychological support following a diagnosis, see our Coaching and Therapy Services for more information.
Please don’t worry, we’ve got this covered. After you have filled out our enquiry form, a member of our For-Psych team will email you some online surveys to complete. There is no charge for this service. The results will tell us which assessment(s) would be beneficial, and we will give you this information so that you can decide what happens next.
The short answer is yes! At For-Psych we only use Gold Standard, NICE approved diagnostic tools and procedures, just like the NHS! All our Practitioners are Registered Psychologists who must comply with the Health Care Professions Council guidelines and regulations. They have received full training in the diagnostic assessments and are competent to complete these. A thorough and detailed report is provided after every assessment, to help you, and those who work with you, to know yourself better. If you want to receive treatment from the NHS after your diagnosis with For-Psych, your GP will need to make a shared agreement of care. They might say that you will also need to be assessed by the NHS, but this should not hold up the support that you receive from them, and whilst sitting on the long NHS waiting list, you will know that your diagnosis from For-Psych has helped you to understand your strengths and difficulties whilst you wait.
At For-Psych we know how hard it can be to try and navigate life without a diagnosis. That’s why we’re committed to ensuring that you receive an efficient service from us. You can expect to meet with a Practitioner within six weeks of your initial enquiry. After the date of your assessment, you will receive a detailed report and feedback session within four weeks. This means that the process is complete within just 10 weeks of your initial enquiry.
Our years of professional and lived experience tells us that the answer to this question is yes! Neurodiversity is part of who we are and helps to explain why we are brilliant at some things, and why we really struggle in other areas of our lives. Understanding the root causes of your difficulties can help in so many ways. It can help to identify what support needs you have, why you may have struggled for many years in a particular area of your life, what that means for you, and what needs to be done to end the constant self-doubt and suffering that you may have experienced before a diagnosis. We have helped many people to understand themselves more, and the sense of relief that they feel when they finally get the answers that they need can help them to move on and finally believe in themselves. Having a diagnosis can be the key to unlocking your path. Fill out our enquiry form today!
Our fees are based on the amount of time it takes to complete a particular type of assessment. That is why you will see different prices for different assessments. All of our fees can be found on our website, but to save you time, you can click here for the pricing.
