Therapeutic support for neurodiverse children

More than a diagnosis

For‑Psych is a specialist psychology service offering therapeutic and post‑diagnostic support for neurodiverse children, young people, adults, and families. Here are some important things to know:

  • We believe that people are the experts of their own differences and do not require a diagnosis to work therapeutically.
  • Our clinicians are trained in a range of evidence‑based therapeutic approaches and adapt each intervention to the person’s strengths, sensory profile, communication style, and lived experience.
  • Our work is grounded in the belief that neurodiversity is a natural part of human variation. We focus on strengths, identity, and wellbeing; not fixing, masking, or changing who you are.
  • You don’t need to have a diagnosis to access our support. Neither do you need to have had an assessment with us.

We offer therapy to create spaces where people can understand themselves, feel validated, and develop ways of living that feel authentic and sustainable. Our team supports:

  • Children and young people navigating big emotions, sensory needs, and social pressures
  • Adults making sense of a new or long-suspected diagnosis
  • Parents and carers wanting to understand and support their child
  • Individuals experiencing anxiety, low mood, burnout, or overwhelm
  • People exploring identity, unmasking, and self-acceptance

Every person’s experience is different. We tailor our approach to your needs, preferences, and strengths.

Support for children and young people

The support we offer children varies depending on their age, developmental stage, and the difficulties they are experiencing. Across all ages, our work is flexible, relational, and grounded in understanding what the young person needs to feel safe, regulated, and understood.

Younger children often benefit from a parent‑and‑child approach. We may begin by meeting with parents first to understand the child’s needs and prepare for joint work. We will then have sessions with the child. These may focus on emotional understanding, sensory needs, and strengthening connections at home. As sessions progress, we will check-in with parents and sometimes have parent-only sessions to promote support.

Older children and teenagers may be seen individually, depending on their preferences and the nature of their concerns. We agree together on how sessions will run and what level of parental involvement feels appropriate. Typically, we invite a parent or carer to join for the final 10 minutes of each session to support communication and continuity.

Our work with children may include:

  • Making sense of a diagnosis and its impact
  • Understanding sensory processing and emotional regulation
  • Exploring executive functioning challenges
  • Reducing shame and self‑criticism
  • Building self‑compassion and celebrating strengths
  • Navigating relationships, work, and daily life in ways that feel authentic
  • Listening to your body and recognising signs of burnout

We aim to create a space where you can be fully yourself without judgement or pressure to “fit in”.

Our therapeutic approach

We adapt evidence-based models to be accessible and meaningful for neurodiverse clients. This may include:

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
  • Compassion Focused Therapy
  • Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy
  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
  • Sensory-informed strategies
  • Strengths-based approaches

Therapy is always paced carefully, with an emphasis on safety, collaboration, and respect for neurodiverse ways of experiencing the world.

What to expect

Your first appointment is an opportunity to get to know you, understand your goals, and decide together what support will be most helpful. We will explore:

  • What brings you to therapy
  • What you hope to understand or change
  • Your strengths, interest and preferences
  • Any sensory and communication needs
  • What a comfortable and safe space looks like for you

From there, we agree on a plan that feels manageable and supportive.
